new desktop config help needed

Hey guys,

I need a better computer for my architecural visualisation (currently using a Macbook Pro i7 2.2 quad core, 1gb video, 8gb ram), and i would really apreciate your advice since i am not familiar with pc parts. After i spent some time on various forums and sites i came up with this configuration:

-processor Intel Core i7 3930k
-video Gigabyte Radeon 7970HD windforce
-Kingston (2x8)16GB 1600MHz DDR3
-case Antec gx700
-monitor 24" Samsung S24B350H
-storage 250GB OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD
-motherboard Sabertooth X79 (or maybe something cheaper)
-Power Source Corsair 700W

I will be using Archicad and Cinema 4D for Modeling and Rendering.

This would cost me around 2000$ where i live and that's all i have. Do you advice me to buy a workstation instead? Though, i doubt for this money a WS would be more performant.

What do you think?

Thanks for feedback!

Post Socket 2011

I am also building a rig for Modeling/Gaming so I came out to a different conclusion than you.
XSI/ 3DS Max/ After Effects etc... GAMES!!!
After days of research...

-processor Intel Core i7 3930k
You don't need to buy this high end i7. The performance gain doesn't justify the price. You are also on a budget. I would go with the i7 3820. With mostly similar performance. Upgrade the CPU down the line, perfectly reasonable for 2011 socket MBs.

-video Gigabyte Radeon 7970HD windforce
This may be too high for rendering... especially if you don't game. Check out Radeon 7870 ~240.

-Kingston (2x8)16GB 1600MHz DDR3
This seems fine. I am also doing a (2x8)16GB. I went with an 1866, but the choice isn't so clear cut. Quad Channels offer almost no benefit at this point. I will expand later on if my multitasking calls for it.

-case Antec gx700
Antec 1100, personal preference. ~100

-monitor 24" Samsung S24B350H
didn't research about monitors yet.

-storage 250GB OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD
Constant rendering will reduce the lifespan of the drive. Up to you though.

-motherboard Sabertooth X79 (or maybe something cheaper)
Went with P9X79 Pro. Same price point, but you don't need the silly armor and chipset fan. Pro or Deluxe has much more features for value and better OC results if you are into that.

-Power Source Corsair 700W
I went with a HX850. I like the modular design, and will support a 2nd GPU when the times comes. This is my rendering/gaming compromise.

I haven't completed this build yet. I will let you know how it turns out.

How does this look to you guys?
