Lacus Opalus

This image, that I created in Maya, was inspired by my birthstone, the opal. I tried to create an environment that would make the viewer feel like they are in a room inside an opal. The hexagonal structure refers to the honeycomb pattern that is formed by the stacked silica molecules that make up the opal structure. The fountain refers to the water content of the gem and the eye in the background refers to old Roman superstitions that opals may have had the ability to cure eye problems, render the wearer invisible, and protect them from the Evil Eye.
