Storey board: rough sketches.

Still learning, but I hope to gain a lot of experience by participating.

page 6, still needs work, but I am happy so far.

the difficulty for me (mostly due to inexperience) is how to aproach the dialogue shots as Amy and John are looking at the pictures most of the time.

yeah it is a difficult composition set up. i seem to be using lots of over the shoulder type shots, or two's where they are cheated out. ot crossing the horizon is going to be really difficult on this one. i guess that's part of the cinematographic challenge.
Since my drawing is a bit like yours, I know I'll have to do a lot of reframing in the 3d layout/animatic phase.

I have to agree that getting the right point of view is very important. You can do lots of interesting things with it though, you don't have to feel constrained to just one shot on a single frame, you can lay different camera angles next to each other. Maybe one point of view of the painting 'watching' John and Amy as the painting is essentially a person in the scene, and one over the shoulder shot from Amy and John. Or maybe John is wearing shades and the reflection shows the painting - think Morpheus in the Matrix offering Neo the red and blue pills.

I hope you sort out these problems, you have made a good start getting a thorough understanding of the script.

I had too thought of a shot from within the painting, possibly the last frame pg.1. ( the original sketches are A4 pages with two lines (6 frames) per page.)

The challenge is to make it look like the painting's perspective, and not just a frontal shot.

my rough sketch for the trunk-man painting has a curtain that would frame the shot from an inside the painting perspective.


I think some shots may develop as I get a clear idea of "inside the painting" side of things.

There is obviously a reality "inside", but I need to resolve (in a somewhat logical fashion) how the paintings are able to interact with each other.

Rough Storyboards or 3D pre-visualization: gallery - building



Build the gallery, I wanted a "modern" gallery. the first bay near the entry/door is an area for scupture, with two bays for paintings. windows/entry doors look out at a courtyard. (to be built)
Textures are not final, just wanted to get the forms right. aprox 6 metres
between the walls of the bays.

Opening shot is on the right. The idea is to give the viewer a look at the paintings on the left wall, to introduce and be able to recognise some of the other "painting" characters that appear later in the chase scene.

Rough Storyboards or 3D pre-visualization: marsupial dragon



I have been thinking about the compositions for the paintings in the gallery.
I have sort of worked backwards on this so I will do the chase scene first, then build paintings from the extra characters created for it. I am using iClone as my render engine and it requires relativly low res models.
Most of the models will be ones I have designed. As a Short film entry I understand I am able to use purchased assets, which I will use for some of the Characters in the paintings.
As a certified content developer some of my models are already available as iClone content. (skeleton) but most will be made by me for this film.


I will be modeling and rigging the dragon. Posibly being an australian, i wondered what would a marsupial dragon look like??
I have roughed out the body, I still have to do the front hands/claws and the wings.
Started out box modeling, this is the first time I have used the nurms, not 100% sure I am doing it right but I am getting the shape I like.
I imagined a snake-like neck and tail.

Once the front claws are done I will take it into Z-brush to do some textures and have a go at exporting normal/bump map for it.

Rough Storyboards or 3D pre-visualization: Paintings WIP



I have started on the paintings in the gallery.

All except the angel are rendered in iClone. I modeled the topless head figure, the skellitons and robot.
other content is purchased from reallusion and angel figure from Daz3d.

Rough Storyboards or 3D pre-visualization: ainting - Elephant Man



The Elephant Painting.
I decided to model the head as a morph, So I could make use of the animation tools available by using iClones native bone and character system for ease of posing and eye movement.
The trunk length was governed by the limited polys I could pull from the face. Even less for the two extra trunks, so they are more like appendage than trunks.
The body is iClones "Moe" character with a new skin texture.
Divan is an imported Daz3d poser prop, and the curtains are textured, native iClone "3d Surface" props.

Rough Storyboards or 3D pre-visualization: kanga dragon modeling



Worked on the Kanga-dragon.
I started to rig him, and discovered that I needed to re-do the mesh in a "T-Pose" to make things easier.
I separated/removed the tail to create an "animated accessory" of it, as I dont think I can add bones to the Native iClone Rigg.
I am using an animated Wing prop/accessory from a Reallusion newsletter to get things done in time.
I can still see things that I can improve on (like a complete remodel), and if I have time I will get back to it.

Scratch Voice track and/or original footage: John and Amy voice



Due to lack of anything resembling a recording studio.

Voices are my own altered with voice changer 6. diamond.

I tried various settings trying to find ones that did not sound too much like a robot.

iClone only supports one voice trak so setting up the scene requires each figure to be loaded with their dialogue one at a time,
selecting the next character over writes the voice trak, so a dummy figure is loaded last with the mixed voice trak.

voices were recorded separately and the wave files edited for the sound track.
