Rough Storyboards or 3D pre-visualization: EON Title concept board

Well as I'm still waiting on the postman to turn up with my copy of the book, I thought I could get on with some of the parts that dont need an indepth knoledge of the story.

Trying out a few logo ideas here ~ I wanted to go with "6" but my fave so far is "5"

I know I'll need a planet at some point so here is one. I need to work out how to get the night time side of the Earth illuminated with city lights etc, but I hav'nt worked out how to get the lights only to appear on the dark side, any sugestions (in Lightwave)

Use a Light Info node (direction output) as the Vector input for an Incidence node. Plug the Result into a gradient node with 2 keys, both set to Show Output. Now, plug the regular color map into one key's Color input, and the nighttime image into the other key's Color input. Hopefully that'll get you started.

Big props to weepul on NT boards for the heads-up on the Light Info node...

BTW - where'd you find your maps? Cloud layer I've got is pretty low-rez.

Thanks for the nod towards NODES, I've been avoiding them but looks like a good oppourtunity to get in there and figure them out, its not quite working yet and of course FPrime wont help but Vipers pretty fast.

Can you see where I'm going wrong in this image?
Thanks
Richard

Forgot to mention, the cloud map comes from http://www.celestiamotherlode.net I think, another good source is Blue Marble. Also checkout Visibleearth. What ever texture you use remember to only use it for the transparenct channel and a bit of the bump map. Put a proceduray in the bump to get the detail.

Rough Storyboards or 3D pre-visualization: Earth update

I finally worked out how to do the nigt time side of the earth, a simple tight gradient in the luminosity chanel did the trick.

Somehow my e-mail notification didn't get through on your first couple replies. Anyway, looks like you figured it out on your own! Nicely done - lookin' great so far!

When I'm doing a planet in Maya I use a surface luminance node patched into a blend colors. It's a little more complicated than that because I also use custom attributes to be able to individually tune the intensity of each side as well.
Here's a shot of the maya network if it helps. If you have any questions I'll try to help even though I don't use lightwave I imagine some of the ideas are the same.
I'm really impressed with the atmosphere glow you've got. Is that post or rendered in LW?

Cant access Challenge pages

Well, loks like I wont be compeeting this time :( I can access the forum pages but the images must be stored on a different server as no images load. I think the challenge pages must be on the same server as I cant get them to load, the pages just time out so I cant upload anything. This has been going on for the past 10 daays or so.
Anybody else having similar problems?
For the meantime will it be ok to host the images on my own site?
