Concept Sketch or 3D pre-visualization: LME - Last Minute Effort

This probably won't count as I won't have much time to interact with the community... but just for the fun of it, here is my last minute effort.

The inspiration is the first chapter of the book when they try to get the ISCCOM Drake to take a look at the "stone"...

The idea is this is the scene where the stone becomes first visible by the Drake. To do this I wanted it to be reflected in the lens of the scope, so it's an indirect first view of the stone. May or may not have the earth in the background...

Cheers!
Dom

Early stages of modeling... this will be the hull of the Drake.

Modeling: LME - Further modeling

Most elements of the drake have been modeled still needs a few pieces... still need to model the stone. As this is a LME it probably won't be fully resolved.

Modeling: LME - Complete model

Shading (Textured and lit): LME - Early texturing

Beginning to texture the various parts.. trying to keep it subtle so that the blackness of space and the reflection on the lens become the focus.

Shading (Textured and lit): LME - The Stone

Whipped up a quick stone... It won't ever be seen close up or as a whole, so it's just sketchy, but hopefully will do the trick.

Post Effects and Compositing: LME - Testing Post

Changed brightness/contrast, added a starfield background (not sure about rules for using photographs...), and a token lens flare, nothing final about it, just testing.

Final Render: LME - Final

Lost the token lens flare... added a subtler lighting effect on the bottom right of the lens. Kept the starry background photo (which was edited)... it's a real telescope photo publicly available... dunno if it is acceptable.. hope so. Now to the video... last minute!

Final Render: T_LME - Final Vide (Total Last Minute Effort)

Software: XSI

This is the video, I would have liked to composite in the starry background, but software and time limitations aside this is it. Basically just tells the brief story of the Drake encountering the Stone for the first time as visualised by the reflection in the lense. Note also it is visible in the reflection of the solar cells on the left first.... creepy.

This is the larger format of the final still 3D image. The inspiration is the first chapter of the book when they try to get the ISCCOM Drake to take a look at the "stone"...
