Hi there, I am looking for a book that explains principles of lighting. I am not looking for tutorials on lighting software techniques, but rather just understanding how lighting works. Eg- how a scene would look if it were lit in different situations. I figure if I have a good understanding of lighting, then my drawings/ illustrations will be much more realistic.

While there are lots of great books on the topic of lighting, what best helped me understand lighting was understanding what light actually is. Might get a bit heavy for you, but it's all just algebra really, and well worth your time:

Here's a few that I have found very helpful as well; most of these are available via online books supplies such as Amazon, etc.:

Light for Visual Artist
Advanced Maya Texturing & Lighting

3D Lighting Concepts & Techniques
Hope that helps,
