Distorted Mirror/Glass Reflections
I've been trying to get a tower model looking like this.
As you can see the reflections are very distorted and the tower has a lot of glass panels, all dirty and stuff. I modeled the tower. I'm having trouble with glass material. Any help with how I can get the dirt would be appreciated as well. But mainly I'm trying to get the glass right.
I have just a cylinder for the middle part, did not modeled the panels one by one, I figured that would be done with a bump map and a diffuse map.
But I can't get those distorted reflections.
I'm using 3ds Max 2014 with V-Ray (mentalray is fine too).

There are a couple of ways to do this without modelling individual windows.
A greyscale fractal like image plugged into you reflection and refraction color slots.
A slight displacement applied onto the entire cylinder would also do it. I would use displacement rather then bump as it will distort the geo for a better refractive solution.
but the best way would be to model the windows and offset their rotation very slightly. that would give you a slightly different refraction/reflection for each. plsu you could add dirt and grim better and more accurately.
