Creating a lightmap from a group of geometry

Hi all-

I've been learning how to create a lightmap for a building. The tutorial I've watched creates a layer that includes all the separate geometry. Then they say, select the building and then create UVs > automatic mapping.

When I try to group the geometry, and then grab the group and try to create the UVs, it won't let me because I'm selecting the group and not geometry. But if I select all the geometry in the building, and create a new UV set, I get a bizillion individual uv maps for each geometry item. I thought there might be a way to select the layer and all the geometry by doing so,but I can't find a way to do that either. What I want is one UV set that includes ALL the geometry in the building group.

Help? What am I missing? The tutorial doesn't cover something here. Thank you.

Nevermind. Yes, you have to combine all objects into one mesh first. Duh.
