Compositing light rays in post?

It's taking to long to render light rays with my image so I was hoping to render them as a separate pass, and composite them in Photoshop. Does anyone know of any good tutorials or have any advice on how to do this?

You can make a new render layer and assign a black surface shader to everything (this on maya, if it is another software, wathever shader that renders black without shading informations is fine).
Then setup your rays in this layer and render.
You can then composite the rays on top of the beauty layer with add or over

which software and renderer?

if you are using 3ds max you can just do what was said by nookie - having a black material on everything ("material override" in the render/processing menu), then making a regular spot (not mr spot) with shadow maps and volume light assigned to it and render with SCANLINE. This renders incredibly fast so it's nice for animations as well.

for compositing in ps/ae, you can either use screen blending mode or use the volumelight pass as a desaturated matte for a pale yellow solid with normal blending mode and use levels or curves to tweek it. the advantage with this last method is that the volume light will always stay the same color no matter how bright/dark you make the matte, unlike if you apply levels/curves adjustments directly to the volume pass, which will mess up the saturation.
