Tintin's boat lamp.

Hi guys,

I think I know too little about texturing, lightning and shading in maya so I'm doing a little exercise for myself where I copy-modelled a scene from Tintin which I thought had great lightning, shading and texturing. Now before I get started I was wondering what your approach would be in recreating this scene with Maya and Mental Ray?

What do you guys think is a good approach to building a boatlamp like that: including that nice fog/glow? How do you make a light with that look in maya and mental ray? Should I use a Parti Volume? glow? or a foglight? So in general.. how would you guys built this scene? Thanks for any help!

I'd be happy to share the scene with anyone who wants to join in! If you want the scene just let me know.

EDIT:
Here's the download for the scene! I've uploaded a maya .ma and a .fbx version. Please let me know if there are any problems with importing/opening the scene. Make sure you post your progress and tricks in this thread so everyone can learn from each other yeah?

As for the tubes.. you'll need to duplicate and rearrange them a bit yourself from the tube that's already in there.. If anyone makes some extra assets, please upload them and share them here.

Good luck!

Seems like a fun lighting challenge. I might give it a go in Vray, if you upload the scene

hi Siebe, looks like fun

Workflow wise I suggest rendering out in passes, it will give you much more flexibility when it comes to things like getting those lights looking the way you want.

look forward to updates
Steve

Thanks guys, nice to see that people join in, I will upload the scene asap 'cause the project was on hold for a while., just a few more uv patches and it's ready to go. Would be nice to share our techniques and approaches to this scene.

I'm rendering passes and using a linear workflow. I don't composite in Nuke yet and for now I'm using aftereffects with extractor effect to get the passes out of the exr, but I guess Nuke is way better for that.

I also looked into the fog effect, I think I'll go for a simple volume light for that and not for the Parti Volume technique. I think I will render the scene black with just the volume light in a seperate render layer and composite that in post.

So here's a little update, I will probably redo this asset again, 'cause I'm not totally happy with it yet, it's still a little rough. This is a screenshot from Mudbox where I'll be doing most of my texturing in.

texturing in mudbox? not opting for Mari? with the new layer system its a blast!

Looking good so far. I hope I get some time soon for some tests.

I think Mudbox is fine for this, itīs layer based as well, and the geometry dosenīt look too complex.

What render do you intend to use?

If you use MR you can maybe use fluids for the volumelights and glow in post.
If I get a crack at it, I will try it in Vray, since volumelights are alot easier to set up there, and will probably faster.

I will do this thing in Mental Ray, but I definitely want to learn more about Vray in the near future.

No problem, this project is a little bit on hold, too busy at work, but I will definitely pick this up later-on
