Raw Shadow Vs Shadow Pass

What's the difference between a raw shadow pass and a shadow pass? When are they used in what situations?

The shadow pass retains the diffuse colour component of the material it's cast on. The raw shadow pass is a grayscale image, defining just the shadow itself without colour information.

For a best additive process in compositing, you should include shadows with your diffuse pass and comp additively like this:

diffuse + indirect diffuse + specular + reflection + scattering + emission + translucency

This should preserve the look of your beauty pass.

Doing shadows separately will break this intentionally. But may be ok for extra control as long as you are aware you can't reconstruct a beauty pass easily this way and might have artifacts.
My opinions are always my own...and maybe a friend's, but never my employer's.
