HMC #37: Femme-Fatale - Carmen Sandiego

Hey guys,

I've never done one of these before, but it looks like a great opportunity for me to get my character modelling skills up.

Not sure if anyone knows about the Carmen Sandiego games from the 90's. They were an educational series, and I remember playing them a lot in elementary school in the early 90's. The main charachter, Carmen Sandiego was some kind of international super thief, and the game in some way revolved around that.

I was drawn to the character for a number of reasons. First, I wanted to do something cartooney, as I'm not skilled enough for something photo-realistic. I really like the more masculine qualities about the character; the wider jaw, high collar, and the hat. Despite those qualities though, she manages to stay feminine with the lip stick, mascara, sharp nose, and long hair.

As far as composition, I'm really not sure yet. Any ideas on this would be much appreciated. For the look, I'm going for a cartoony style, hopefully similar to what you might see in a modern 3D animated film.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,
AJ

(some of these are the official art, others are deviant knockoffs, and a few might be original art, but I cant find the original artist to give credit.)

Yeah nice character. The top left ref is killer, I would go for that look and those proportions. This is going to be a fun one.

@Robert Thank you sir!

@Samuel Thanks!

@Wyatt Many Thanks!

@Chris Thanks! That one is my favourite as well, and Ill pull a lot from it.

@Tom She's right here...

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Sorry I haven't updated. Here is my progress so far. I know this is probably the lamest character and the worst execution on the thread, but hopefully with some feedback, I can get it looking right. I'm not a very experienced character artist, but I'm getting better with every hour that I cut away at this. I'm about 8 hours into it, and I hope to invest another 10 or 12 hours before the deadline. Sorry I haven't posted much on anyone else's threads. I've been reading though, and slowly learning the art of character modelling. Any feedback or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a few more reference images that I found.

And my progress

A screen grab

Thanks again for having a look,
-AJ

@Chris - Thank you sir! I really appreciate the comments. I could do two versions. I do think the dress drawing is really nice, and with as simple as the character is, I could probably knock it out in a few hours if people want to see it.

@Wyatt - Thanks for your comment! I do think the red trench coat is pretty recognizable as the main feature of the character. Plus looking at all the other entries in the thread, I think a properly clothed woman might stand out more.

I was wondering if I could get some opinions on the eyes. I ended up rebuilding them as large spheres. It looks ok from the front, but it doesn't hold up very well from the side. I'm going for the cartooney look, so I'm not sure what would be the best way to proceed. I do think I want the pupil and iris modelled out correctly so it catches light. The first renders I posted are just with a flat piece of geometry welded into the eye socket, and a texture map makes up the iris. I think the sphere eyes look a little more life like from the front, but a little too alien like from the side.

I've also got the body blocked out more. I think I'm going to go for the scarf and the closed coat. I'm not sure if I'm going to tuck the hair into the coat, or leave it flowing over the collar. I also think the arms are a little long. Is there a certain proportion that they need to be in relation with the body? Right now the wingspan is about 9/10 the height of the body.

Thanks again for the feedback everyone,
AJ

You are right!

Scratch the dress
Edit: That was cheeky of me!

AJ1 Looks nice.
The eyes look shallow and I am guessing the bald shots are ortho which makes the eyes look crossed also the forehead would need more volume. These thing are not visible with the hat and hair though where everything looks pretty ok. If it were mine I would try to do realistic shapes for the lips. Even though it is a cartoon more real lip shape might look good.

Cheerio

Thanks again for the feedback Chris. I've done some work on the eyes to make them less alien like. By eyeballs are so huge, so its probably not going to hold up well from the side. But its getting better.

I've done some work on the coat and gloves. Things are roughly skinned to a rig, and its poseable. I'm thinking for the final render, Ill pose it, freeze the model, and then tweak the creases and folds in the coat so they look more natural. I haven't settled on a final pose, so any input on this would be appreciated.

The hair is tucked in the coat for now, but If I have time, Ill model it outside the coat. I'm also hoping to add part to the yellow scarf that hangs out of the coat.

Thanks again for having a look,

the pose with both arms up looks too square. If you do go with that make sure to counter pose the shoulders and hips. I would suggest the pose on the right but doing something more with the other arm. maybe cross it under the bust. Make sure to counter pose the shoulders and hips in this pose too for that matter.

I highly concur with the idea of posing and then finalizing the cloth. That's what I always do if I've left myself enough time.

The mouth and cheek area is still looking a little odd. If you have time pay some attention to what happens to the cheeks when your mouth smiles that much and see if you can get that into the final sculpt.
