HARDCORE MODELING!: Hollywood Dream Machines: Beetle Herbie

Hi there,

Herbie will be my first car I model so why not enter the challange.

hmm looks bumpy. in particular around the headlights.

well to be honest the mesh is not good. itīs way too dense and unbalanced in some areas which makes it hard to control the surfaces.
maybe check out some tutorials about car modeling (we have plenty over at smcars.net) or check out my hardsurface tutorial (link in my signature).

Seems like you're missing a whole slew of hidden curves when it comes to modeling the fenders. I've modeled old Bumblebee a few times, so at the very least, I know a lot of the trouble-spots on this guy.

At the risk of disqualifying myself from modeling 'Bee again for this challenge, I'll show you a wireframe flow for the fender, granted it's a '67 beetle and not the '63 that you're trying to build.



Hope this helps. Also, I didn't use splines for guides. That may have cut down the time I had to bang my head with figuring out this guy.

heheh, I also modeled a beetle once (for a GTA VC mod, lowpoly) and it's a proper headache because there isn't a single flat bit, everything is curved in multiple directions.

Maje3D: the wireframe looks good but I think the beetle has smoother fenders, there is still a bit of a corner on your model.

MModels: you have the same problem as I did on the fenders, the "corner" where the line sweeps from the side down and to the front of the car. also, try to get all the lines running across the whole car. Now you have the front of the car with 2 poly's and then the fender starts with only 1 poly (at the bottom). Get those lines flowing and it all works. When I model a car I try to look along the lines just as a carpenter would while shaping a chair or something.

Bjiz, yeah that corner was intentional as at the time I thought it was that sharp, but I must've been bamboozled by an optical illusion.
