Slow Motion Muzzle Flash

i'm trying to create a slow motion muzzle flash (like in the matrix) but can't figure out how, especially getting the fire to look right, any suggestions?

i wouldn't use PFlow for this, but rather this approach, with more gizmos, more detailed flames maybe or mapped planes.

i thought of that, but i wanted more of a fluid look to it, kind of like fire flowing out of the barrel. would i be able to use AB to acheive this?

Don't know about AB, so I can't help you with that one. have a look at the fire tutorial on www.allanmckay.com and adapt it to slower speed. You might wwant to have a look here for reference of muzzle flashes.

im going to take a look at that tutorial on allan's sote. I tried to use another of his tutorials (http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/83) and it looked ok in still renderings, but when animated, it looked as thought the "fire" was just being revealed instead of flowing out. Allan if you're reading this, could you offer some help please...

To be honest, I think you would be better off rendering a very high particle count with wind and turbulence/drag to get the fluid look, and once you have the image sequence, blur it in post and map that onto planes to keep the scene simple.

Cheers,

so far, i've been able to achieve the basic animation and texture i want with AB, however i am still having difficulties with making the fire 'roll'. i havnt tried AB swirl yet though, any thoughts on this? so far the animation just comes out without the rolling effect(sort of chunky)

here are some stills at the beginning and end of the anim

Yup, just use animated geometry and noise maps. Flesh it all out in a compositing app to give it some creamy goodness.

ok, so i think I have the colors right, and the basic movement is improving, but i want the fire to glow. I tried using afterburn glow and even VP glow but can't get it to work... any ideas?

thanx Darren

As that Brandon fellow sez, the creamy goodness is brought out in comp.

Dont worry about glows and all that in your 3d app, thats something to be done in comp.
You will never realy pull off a clean nice looking glow inside of max

Get the shape, movement, and general coloring in max, then add fine detail, and glow in comp.

I personly like to create muzzle flashes using atmopheric gizmos placed in a muzzle flash shape, then apply the AB combusion effect, use a noise map for the shape.
Now ui can animate the combustion effect and the gizmo to get the shape speed u want.
One thing I find that helps is a little 2d displacment using the muzzle flash as the dsplacing source.

hope that helps

thanks i will give that a try. is there any reason why afterburn won't succumb to motion blur?
still lacking that "fluid" motion though....

only the effects panel motion blur works for AB, u also have to turn on create image channels
in the AB render dialog,

unless u do some clever part animation, u likley wont get good fluid movement from AB,

not what its good for IMHO anyway.

to get that "rolling" effect use a torus and stick some particles to it, then animate it's rotation in it's modifier tab... often creates a good "fluid" effect. For some of the rest look in the pflow thread for a tutorial by loran he has some good info on how to set up the other particles to make them act more fluid (keep apart and drags)
