how would you model this?

Hi friends
What do you think is the best approach to model such details or wooden carvings in 3ds max(preferably) or maya?
I was looking for this link but it seems to be dead.
It contain some tips and tricks to do such things.If someone is having any info on this pls share.
Any ideas/suggestions are most welcome.

here's the link to the dead link you found. Not quite what you're looking for though.
i can only imagine doing this with the use of some sculpting would be hell doing this with polys.

yeah i would use Zbrush to do a high poly sculpt then normal map it, modeling all that detail in max or maya would be hell. you could try doing it with texturing also.

The best bet would be to go with ZBrush or Mudbox to model all that detail, while creating the base mesh in whatever software you use.

Or if you don't own either, then you can push and pull vertices with a decently subdivided mesh, and smooth it out, (make sure it is subdivided enough, or the smoothing will change the form of the chair drastically, the more polygons an object has, the less affected by the smoothing.
