Modelling the face around the eyeballs

In yet another attempt at modelling a face around the eyeballs, I got a face which was puffed up around the eyeballs. So much that it looked a lot like one of those ETs from Steven Spielberg films. Now that had me thinking- do I shift the eyeballs? Do I scale them differently (especially along the side) so that they're not perfect spheres? Do I model the face flat towards the nose?

Just move the eyeballs back further into the head. For reference, eyeballs are slightly smaller than your average golf ball if you need an idea of how big they should be. They should be near perfect spheres except for the lens which pushes out of the shape only a few millimeters.
