need help with technique of a round head

so i have been modeling off a 3/4 concept and i always wondered how people made nice round heads, like those nice round forms around the head to get that nice cartoon feel. i am using maya.

Errh not sure if i get the question right...but to get a nice looking round shape you use the least amount of polygons possible and add subdivision on top. The reason you want less polygons is to let the subdivision average the shape and make it nice and round. If you add a subdivision modifier to a box you'll get a sphere shape and very little verts to move around to deform that shape without introducing artifacts.
