Sketchbook Thread of ah.heng ( `△)ノ!

Hi, I'm ah.heng, 24, from Singapore.
I studied in an arts and design school for 3 years and am now serving the final few months of a compulsory military service. I'll be going to Japan this coming June to study traditional animation, but I'm rather rusty, to use a local saying, "I've returned all that I've learnt to my teachers".

I aspire to be a traditional animator though I dabbie in a bit of web and graphic design once in a while.

I'm starting this thread to keep track of my own anatomy studies as well as my foray into digital painting/sketching. I'll try to attempt all the previous OFDWs as well as any other exercises that catch my eye.

this was meant as a 15 minute sketch but took quite long to do. i used all 15 minutes doing the face, and when i realised time was up, spent another 10 minutes doing the hair, body, clothes and some touch up. i think the face is a little too round, but otherwise i'm quite happy with it.

ref

practise for eyes. this was quite fun. all these eyes belong to ayumi :P

ah.heng,

Very nice studies! What you might think about trying next is a set of drawings of noses, and then perhaps eyes, ears, lips, etc. Try going for a realistic vs. a manga style...I think you will push your skills much further that way!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

thanks for the comments
yeah, i realise that my style leans very much towards manga too and i'm trying to correct that. hmmmmm. correct isn't really the right term, but yeah, i want to do realistic drawings. i had quite a bit of problem with the lips for the above picture, any pointers?

my lips usually tend to look swollen.

ah.heng,

Try blocking in the lips with short, straight lines, vs. trying to draw them with curves outright. I think that if you find the general shape first, this will help.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

ah.heng,

Check out the last tutorials (and the others if you like) at the end of this post:

TUTORIALS - Shading Techniques - by Various Artists
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpos...55&postcount=10

Stahlberg's tutorial details how to go from grayscale to color in digital painting. I recommend this method to all beginning painters.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Ah, another bloke from Singapore.

Those are really nice eye studies, and the pic of the baseball player's pretty cool, too.

Oh, and Ayumi Hamasaki is hawt.

ps. Just curious, where are you serving?

yo teck, i'm in 41sar.

definitely less than 15 minutes.
this little boy was standing infront of me for like 10 seconds, so i drew him quick. details were made up from memory.

gestures practise.
break down of an animation from a fight scene. noted only the hits, inbetweens i made up myself.

character design for a short film i'm working on.
pose is drawn from memory, otherwise no referenced used. drew while waiting for a client at coffeebean.

no reference used. screwed up the feet, so i cut it off.

thanks

a little update.

this was really old, but it fit the topic.

for this, i sat around on a saturday night and observed people. but there weren't much intersting poses to capture, so i stopped after half an hour.

i did this last night and some this afternoon.
