Sketchbook Thread of JohnR

Hi everybody! Well…to begin with…hmm I am 17 years old and right know I don’t know what I am going to study after finishing school.

At the moment I want to concentrate all my efforts at drawing and study as well. Last month I posted some sketches at the 2D forum and all the crits were about the anatomy. I was thrilled about that, and since that moment I started to notice that it was true! All my sketches had anatomy problems.

Well I hope you can guide me and give me some tips. I am going to show you my old sketches and the new ones I am doing with a book of an author called Andrew Loomis. THANKS IN ADVANCE

Welcome aboard! Glad to see your Anatomy Thread here, and I hope that you will really benefit from doing some independent study here with feedback from the community.

It's nice to see your work! I think you have a great start, and it looks as though you might enormously benefit from doing some Master Copies ~ by which I mean, doing copies of Drawings done by Master Artists, such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Rubens, and many others.

I recommend checking out Erich's thread, as he just completed a large set of Master Copies which I think were of enormous benefit to him:

Mainly peoples' Anatomy Threads are self~directed, but of course I am happy to offer suggestions and provide informal feedback ~ and of course I always encourage everyone to visit one another's threads and provide constructive comments and criticism.

Thanks! I have done as you told me...I took this picture from Leonardo. I thought it was an easy one. I had a problem with the legs, look, the second one is the one I think is correct...(done with photoshop) the 1st one is the original.

I saw the ones of Erich! Wonderfoul pieces, he knows how to illuminate a figure...thats my big problem...

Muy buenas y bienvenido vecino! Study the Loomis books cause is a GREAT master hehe. Watching your last image I think you´d increase the curve line of the body to make the human figure more dynamic.

Wow, that was fast!

I think that the thing to note about doing Master Copies is that it's not about critiquing individual pieces, so much as doing a large number of pieces, and receiving an overall review. I recommend setting a goal ~ such as doing 5~10 Master Copies a week ~ and posting them here. I guarantee you that the more you do, the better you will get!

Also, a format that I really recommend folks following, for doing both Master Copies, and drawings from Photographic or Live Reference, is to do a series of 2 / 5 / 10 minute sketches from a single reference / model, where you start from scratch with each drawing (vs. building successively on one).

Hey GOnzalo! Gracias por la bienvenida!...Yeah I notice the error with the curve of the figure.

Please help me...I did this male with the Help of Andrew Loomis´book. Can you tell if the proportions and the perspective are correct? cause I want to make a digital painting.

Good to see this piece! I think at the moment, the head looks a bit small for the body. There are some problems with the upper arm that may be easier to fix once you start to paint digitally.

If you have not done much digital painting, I highly recommend starting off in grayscale, using just three values: white, mid~gray, and black.
