Maya or Blender

Autodesk Maya or Blender What do you guys think or recommend?

No need for versus threads , especially if one of the contenders is free (blender).

I hate Maya, but its widely used and most likely you'll be required to be proficient with it. If you are a student, get a three year student license, and test them both.

What are you going to create? Children's animation? Film VFX? Broadcast graphics? Game content?

Choice of 3D software depends heavily on precisely WHAT you are going to produce with it.

Why not consider C4D or other options as well?

As mentioned, Blender is free, and Maya has a very flexible and easygoing student license. I'd recommend installing them both, playing around with both, and seeing which one clicks. You might find one of the two feels easier to learn for you than the other, which is a big plus.

If you're a student, C4D also has a student license, and it's worth looking at. Good luck.

The only question should be whether you want to go freelance (Blender/C4D) or work for a company (Maya). Each has strengths and weaknesses but basically what you can do in one you can do in the other, or at least find a viable workaround if you can't.

No harm in knowing both, especially since Blender's free. Whatever you choose, they're just tools. They'll both get the job done because, at the end of the day, app choice comes in second to skill and execution. The only time app choice REALLY matters is when you're looking to make a buck and an employer/client demands that you know one over the other.

That said, once you master one app, learning a second, third, or twelfth is really a trivial matter. It's just a matter of acknowledging that somebody moved the furniture and then trying to figure out where they put it. That's why you need to know/master one app first. Beyond mastery, it creates a valuable point of reference for you to transfer those skills and your accumulated knowledge.
