New to MAYA '18 and want to detach 'Mery' eyes, facial skin etc.

Hi there.
I literally just got MAYA 18 and its stupidly complicated.
I'm sure everyone was frustrated when first navigating this.
Nothing selects when you click, the 'skin' button doesn't exist etc.
First thing I've done is download Mery as I'd like to work with a basic character instead of building from scratch so I know where I'm going.
I'm looking to paint skin tones and work on the eyes but finding this procedure impossible.
How do you take off components and adjust them, change them etc?

man...you are doing it so wrong. You do understand, that you want to modify a scene with thousands of nodes all inter-connected, right? Most of the nodes invisible and locked. For example, good character rigs have the geometry locked, because it gets in the way of the animators.
If you want to change the skin tones you need to find the material in the hypershade and see what texture is attached. There is no need to mess with the geometry.

My real advice, learn Maya with scenes you can understand. There are quite a few methods to lock the geometry and without having the scene at hand is impossible to tell how they locked it.
