what software and technologies have CG studios invented that became widespread?

For instance formats like openEXR, openSubdiv, ptex

or software that started life at a studio that later became commercial projects like photoshop, nuke, shake, etc

what others are there that the CG industry created on its own that wasn't originally created for commercial purposes

Most of those "inventions" are actually based off of academic papers published by hundreds of different computer graphics researchers over the last decades.

Most stuff that seems "new" is often an improved implementation of a research paper or five published a decade earlier.

Of course, to make CG software that costs anywhere from 1K to 8K a license seem "sexy", everybody pretends that what is old is actually "new".

Most stuff in CG software is actually just a working implementation of computer graphics techniques theorized much earlier by various people.
