Building a PC for Substance Painter/Zbrush

Hey I'm pretty inexperienced with building computers, I need to build one that is capable of doing some heavy substance work as well as work with a lot of divisions in Zbrush. I'm hoping it will cost less than 2000 Canadian on Black Friday. Could you help me out and suggest a build?

If you are on a budget, AMD Threadripper CPUs (in your case probably a 1800 series with 8 cores) currently offer the best value for money. That in turn determines what motherboards you can use.

I checked out the IBuyPower page - they make prebuilt Threadripper gaming PCs:

https://www.ibuypower.com/Store/AMD...7X-Configurator

For about 1,660 US Dollars you can get a prebuilt system with Threadripper 1800x 8-Core 3.6 GHz CPU + Corsair Liquid CPU Cooler + Gigabyte AX370 Motherboard + 32 GB DDR4 RAM + GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB VRAM + 1TB HDD + 350 Watt Power Supply + Tower Casing.

I've never bought a system from them so I don't know how good they are.

But if you're inexperienced with building PCs yourself, it might be worth thinking about just buying a pre-built system.

The Ryzen 1800x is not a "Threadripper" chip, it's a regular Ryzen chip. Threadrippers are the 1900x (8 cores/16 threads), 1920x (12x24) and 1950x (16/32) chips.

Seen too many users with driver/software related issues with Ryzen, threadripper CPUs and AMD GPUs in general

Here is something that is not super costly but will run Zbrush, Substance painter and others very well :

Processor - AMD Ryzen 7 1700(8 Cores 16 Threads),
if budget doesn't fit buy the Ryzen 5 1600(6 Cores 12 threads)
Motherboard - Any B350 chipset motherboard with 64gb ram support(Asus Recommended)
RAM - 2x16GB = 32GB DDR4 3000 Mhz Gskill (Later upgrade to 64GB)
SSD - 256 Samsung 850 EVO
HDD - 2TB Seagate New Barracuda
Cabinet - Antec P8
Graphics Card - Zotac GTX 1070 Mini 8GB
SMPS - Seasonic SII 620/520

Please avoid Graphics card with lower than 8GB, if you are planning to use Substance Painter(4K Painting works).

Using Ryzen 7 1700 at work for 6 months, no issue with Maya, Mari, Zbrush, Substance Painter, Photoshop and Nuke. Because of Ryzen Intel is releasing CPU's with more cores, otherwise they would have locked us with 4 core 8 threads. I can confirm Ryzen 7 1700 is the best value(price to performance ratio) Processor with 8 cores and 16 threads, when using with windows 10.
Office Config - Ryzen 7 1700, 64GB 3000Mhz Gskill, Gigabyte AB350 motherboard and Zotac GTX 1070 mini 8GB.
Home Config - Intel i7 3770, Intel DB75EN motherboard, 32GB 1600Mhz DDR3 Ram andZotac GTX 1070 mini 8GB.

Any modern Intel/Nvidia machine with as much ram, solid state hard drive and cooling you can afford.

I have been really pleased with my Intel I7 5820K processor, even though it is an older CPU now. It can still keep up with the newer CPUs, here is a benchmark test on Cycles rendering, I'm #11 (Grimm).

Although I mostly render with my GPU (a GTX 980) which is about twice as fast as my CPU.
