IP Incubator Club Thread 2013: Monthly-011: -November 2013

Wanna JOIN the IP Incubator Club? Well the Instructions are below.

But First a Project Spotlight:

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ray & Clovis the web series
STATUS NUMBER: 3!
TEAM MEMBERS: 15 (Voluntary)
START DATE ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE : Next episode on November 21, 2013
WIP THREAD: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthr...f=153&t=1129549
WHAT WENT RIGHT THIS WEEK:

We just finished Episode 5's sound! Woohoo! This is great because some of us are going to the Creative Talent Network's animation festival in Burbank this weekend. After that we'll be off to the Austin Comic-Con and showing off more Ray & Clovis; we even have a little session we're hosting!

WHAT WENT WRONG:

With all the excitement about next week, I've slacked on my animator duties and on my production manager duties. This is a "wearing many hats" thing that I'm sure a lot of you have run into as well. We need to finish animation by next week on our next episode to stay on schedule. The added stress of preparing for the convention has it made it harder to stay on that target.

SHOW AND TELL:

This is from our latest episode. I thought it came out cool ;

in·cu·bate

/ˈɪnkyəˌbeɪt, ˈɪŋ-/ Show Spelled [in-kyuh-beyt, ing-] Show IPA verb, in·cu·bat·ed, in·cu·bat·ing.verb (used with object)
1. to sit upon (eggs) for the purpose of hatching.
2. to hatch (eggs), as by sitting upon them or by artificial heat.
3. to maintain at a favorable temperature and in other conditions promoting development, as cultures of bacteria or prematurely born infants.
4. to develop or produce as if by hatching; give form to: His brain was incubating schemes for raising money.

Welcome to the IP Incubator Club
The idea behind this Club is simple

POST MONTHLY UPDATES of Original IP that you are developing. Hopefully IP that can eventually help the creator generate some income.
Also you should provide CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK to the work posted by other posters of the club.

The idea of this "Incubator Club" is to get away from the gloom and doom and provide a lifeline of support for our fellow artists.

The artists will have at their discretion how much they wish to share on the projects they are working on, what program they will be using and the medium . But the IP HAS BE AN ORIGINAL CREATION.

DEVELOPER CO-SPONSORS
The idea is to match developers with individual sponsors. People whose responsibility is to monitor the progress of a specific project. The sponsors would be fellow developers. It would be their responsibility to provide support and provide guidance to the developer from an outsider's point of view. I'm not advocating "mentor ship" where there usually is an imbalance of expertise/knowledge between two parties. Rather, I envision sponsorship to be a vehicle for peer support, for consultation between and among artists who each have valuable tools, experience, and knowledge to share. Sponsorship is method for both parties to learn and grow professionally and perhaps personally as well.

The Concept

Hey guys! Well today is a big one for me!

I have released the Stasis Alpha Demo, in preparation for my Kickstarter Campaign starting tomorrow.
It's been a whirlwind few days, with me finally letting the game out into the world, and having no idea how anyone would react. But thankfully, the reactions have been pretty good!

Feedback from my games demo:

"Finished the StasisGame demo, every single fan of adventure games HAS to back this next Monday on Kickstarter , let's make this happen! "

"I have now finished Stasis Game demo. What a truly amazing experience. Can't wait to find out what happens next!"

"SO impressed with the Stasis Game demo. The intro scene was jaw dropping. The game is looking great; nostalgic and fresh at once."

"Playing the Stasis Game demo and I think have fallin in love. This is sci fi epicness. The atmosphere is fantastic!"

And an absolute gem from Brian Fargo of Wasteland 2 fame:
"Excellent work! Stasis sets a thick mood and reminds me of a Ridley Scott Film."

I will have a much more comprehensive post tomorrow, but until then, please take some time and give the game a spin for yourself!

Awesome! Looking forward to your campaign. I'm curious, how much work have you done in sending out the demo for reviews in preparation? Or did you already have enough of a following that it happened naturally. Part of my own plans are to send out a demo for my game once it's ready, but building a following and getting the right contacts is a monumental part of this plan.

edit: Also I'm downloading your demo right now and had a thought, you might want to consider releasing it via torrent. Once you launch your Kickstarter, that's going to translate into a lot of bandwidth. Just something to consider.

I do have a list of game reviewers, but when I hit a delay in the Kickstarter approval process, I decided to do a more rigorous play test, and just go public with the demo.

Something I did with that initially, was password protect the download, and have people get the password by tweeting, or posting about Stasis. I got an additional 100 twitter followers, and the demo was downloaded around 300 times (people shared the password after they got it, which I think was kind of awesome!).

This was only yesterday, and currently with the demo going live, and those few people that wrote about it, and tweeted, I'm on around 700 downloads since I went 'live' around 3 hours ago.

I think that large formal reviews ARE important, but this was an experiment in community movement, which can be way more powerful. A preview on RPS will send a few hundred people your way-but if I look at the total number of people that heard about Stasis just these past 2 days alone, it probably ranks in the multiple thousands.

The alpha is being hosted on Amazon, which is decently priced....but if it does start hitting the pocket too hard I may have to torrent it!

Wow, great job on thinking creatively. That's a very clever way to get people engaged in sharing your game with others, and you know that initial crowd of 300 tweets are going to be largely from people who will be your first round of backers once you do launch. Great job, thanks for sharing. Now off to try your demo now that it has finished downloading!

@Pyke Wow, good job Chris. I'm glad you're game is already getting great reviews from the demo. Can't wait to try it out myself!

Now for my own update...

CONCEPT NAME: Le Gouffre

PRODUCTION BLOG: http://legouffre.com/en

CATEGORY: Animation

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Le Gouffre is an 8-minute animated short film about two travellers who embark on the amazing journey of crossing an impossible gap. We are working full-time on this film, living on our own money, and we are basically trying to tell a great, dramatic story for everyone while creating a unique look that blends hand-painted textures with realistic animation.

PROJECT GOALS:

Win festivals, then make a big hit on the internet and gain the visibility and credibility that will allow us to eventually be able to live on telling our own stories.

WIP THREAD: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthr...f=153&t=1085457

WHAT WENT RIGHT THIS WEEK:

Lots of news this time, the last two weeks were fun!

Among other things, we spent some time searching for a nice place where we can do our film's premiere. Lots of theaters were either too small or too costly (we're trying to accomodate up to 600 people), but we might finally have found a good spot and the lady we spoke too was very nice. We'll be visiting tomorrow and see how it goes.

We also gave our current edit to our sound designer and he'll soon take a trip in the woods to record original material. We'll also be sending our edit to our musicians in a couple of weeks so they can start brainstorming ideas while waiting for the picture lock. We really can't wait to finally watch our film with a soundtrack!

WHAT WENT WRONG:

We filmed another short clip for our Making Of today, which was part of the rewards we're offering to our Kickstarter backers. We're trying to find moments here and there without losing too much time, but that's tough since we're already doing a lot of overtime already. We're starting to think about maybe filming most of the stuff in January when the visuals are all done.

SHOW AND TELL:

We posted a new video tutorial showing how Carl animated birds using two simple cycles, the animation mixer and a path.

Check it out on our production blog!

Congrats on getting the Kickstarter off to a good and solid start. At the time of writing this you're just under $40k, so thats really hitting the ground running I think. It just goes to show that if you make something remarkable, people will talk about it, share it and spread it around.

Major props to you.

I think getting the right score/soundtrack will make a big impact on the finished product. This last month I've been thinking a lot about the possible music of the game I'm working on and I feel like there is no way around it, other than paying good money to a professional to do it. Any one got Han Zimmer's phone number?

Also, its cool that you're four-walling the film and premiering it in a cinema somewhere. Thats totally indie man, the sort of thing that Kevin Smith is all about now... well, until he does finish making films.

@Frotze - Man, I wish I had the expandable income to come watch the premiere when it's released. Maybe I'll get lucky and have some cash around that time and make a trip out to Montreal and do a bit of promo for my project while I'm there

@shrunkendesigner - I've often been told that audio is 50% of a video game, and I honestly believe that to be true. Good audio can really sell a game and make it an experience, whereas if you cheap out on audio, you will notice and it will make the game suffer. I would suggest, before you start paying someone, to go to any local meetup groups and try to find an audio designer. I got REALLY lucky and found these guys - http://powerupaudio.com/ - and they offered to do the audio for my Kickstarter trailer for free, in exchange I would commit to either contract them or offer 10-15% revenue sharing. You never know who you might meet if you just throw your project idea out in the open.

Haha, thanks man, that'd be sweet! It's probably going to be some evening in the middle of the week, so I don't know if coming all the way from Vancouver would really be that worth it, but hey, be my guest. It would be fun to have a beer and chat.

I used to be in a band and have access to some very talented musicians. I am considering working on the music with some people I know, but I have some other options available to me too. There is one violinist I have in mind and also a keyboardist who would be really good for the project, but its still early days yet. Never know what might happen. The more the game gets made, and the more I show, I might get an email from some who is perfect.

I did consider the licensing option, like paying for licensed music, but I kind of get a kick out of the idea of having an original soundtrack. We'll see.

Well, I don't know if Chris has already been plugged with his Stasis game, but given he is doing his Kickstarter campain right now and there's no way we can let this funding fail, I'd vote for him. Go go Stasis!!

Pyke,

i didn't yet contribute to these threads (shame on me but its coming..), i just wanted to chip in and congratulate you for your great kickstarter start.

i know its still way too early, but i'm very interested in any experience you make during the campaign (what worked and what didn't).. so if you find the time after the kickstarter (in case you don't drown in a sea of strechgoals ) i would appreciate any info you are willing to share.

best of luck to you for your remaining campaign,

--stephan
