Disney's "Second Screen Live" - most appalling idea ever?

All I can say is I hope and pray that this dies a quick death and I never have to work on a companion app like this. What do people think of this?

I don't even understand it enough to loathe it. I mean from the sound of that article you're really not even interacting with the movie in any way. It makes no sense. You could just do that from home. I guess I don't see the point? Somebody please tell me I'm missing something here because I feel like this just can't be what they intended ...

Eww no, God no! It's bad enough when I sit too close to the running lights in the aisle or they leave the house lights too high. Then someone whips out a cell phone and blinds everybody. Not only that, I hope they've figured out how to stop someone from sitting in the front row and holding up a photo of a penis on their big glowing screen that every kid in the theater would be able to see... you know its going to happen.

Obviously, given the no texting standard and the statement that they will kick you out in theaters now, this will be a special viewing thing like when they show Raider oTLA and Ghostbusters.

I know a 7 year old that I cannot, literally, drag to a movie...why would he want to go to a dark place where you need to sit in a chair and be still and no pause button...he has a 60" TV at home. This makes sense, it seems like fun for the kids. Those western animated movies, though they have angles which appeal to us adults are first, foremost, and to their death FOR KIDS.

If kids like it, great.

I cna't help but laugh when I read the article, especially when I read-

play games, answer trivia, solve puzzles, perform sing-a-longs, and compete with other audience members.

A theatre full of people singing, all at the same time, out of tune and making up words as they go along. This feels so misplaced and like the article said, people spending money on a ticket to not watch the film.

Personally I've never been a fan of musicals, even when this first came out. It's one of the elements that have put me off Disney cartoons. For me I grew up with Dragon Ball Z, Saint Seiya and Super Robots.

Seriously i can only imagine what the meetings where suits come up with these ideas look like.

Sounds a lot like that App Companion feature thing for Xbox One.
Did Disney just hire Don Mattrick?

The idea doesn't have any appeal to me personally, but I really don't get the hate, either. This isn't being proposed as a replacement to standard movie viewing. The target audience is kids who have seen it countless times before on DVD, and now want to watch it in a social, interactive environment; a Rocky Horror for kids, as someone in the Cartoon Brew thread put it.

Probably not even at the same time, because that would be presuming they all fired up the app at the same time. It's just going to be a mess. Aren't kids today becoming more and more attention deficient even without encouraging them?

I honestly thought this was a video from The Onion when I first saw it. The kids and parents jabbing at the screens and not watching the film is a tragic sight.
