I was about to say isn't Ridley Scott producing this? Haven't heard a peep about it, then i found out it is Paul W.S. Anderson directing.

Scott's version is a series by the looks of things.

I was going to mention that this is a Paul "W.hat S.hite" Anderson film, so watch at your discretion.

Whats wrong with Paul anderson?

I thought alot of the resident evil movies were preety well made, Event horizon was preety good, MK was ok, Aliens v predator was ok etc. Nothing wrong with him, yeah they not be shakespere, and have great narrative and acting to some people. Other than that they are ok-good action movies.

We clearly have wildly differing definitions of what we each consider "watchable." It's not snobbery - they are just objectively bad movies.

I may not be a historian but what's with all the fight sequences, when this is supposed to be a natural disaster movie but set in ancient times. I understand that it's hollywood but I'm not buying into this when it's named Pompeii and the volcano is just a set piece. It just feels like a 300 clone gone wrong with a volcano attached to it.

As the trailer started, I was thinking "so how are they going to solve the.. " - six pack appears - "... oh. uhm. k "

After Pearl Harbor, Titanic, and others, it's hard to expect anything different.

Well.. it does seem like there is no movie on Earth that Paul W.S. Anderson thinks he cannot make. The edit for the trailer, including the peaks, valleys, color tones... it's basically Resident Evil.

Action here, action there... kissing here, wide shot there.

Poking here and there about "secrets"......Good standard use of juxtapositions "Hoped for death/Prayed for help"...

There's a special talent at work somewhere here.... Has Paul W.S. Anderson ever been "stumped" by a concept I wonder.

You have a point. Hollywood really needs to ditch all this "big drama" and make more movies about star-crossed lovers stuck on the freeway during endless commutes to their jobs and sending each other cat pics on Facebook.

He's never stumped by a concept..execution seems to almost completely elude him though.

Also his idea of what to do with every concept pretty much converges at some point, no matter what the topic or setting.

Slow mo, explosions, more slow mo, kung fu type stuff, even more slow mo, abs, super slow mo, dialog? editing? What? Slow mo.

Surprised Milla isn't in there somewhere..poor thing.

kinda like watching Titanic, yanno the boat is going to sink.

Pompeii will be pummeled by flying rocks, then covered with a thick cover of volcanic ash and pumice causing buildings to collapse, those who did stay and survived thus far will get flash fried by the pyroclastic flow.

Still it might be ok just for the effects

I think this has been the Hollywood mantra for far too long.....

Another ancient world, Mediterranean-themed story crushed by Hollywood's pumice.

It's actually the out-of-place love story that's problematic for me. Speaking personally as a viewer, I get a bit frustrated when Hollywood takes an epic historical event, inherently full of dramatic possibilities rife for exploration, then ignores it all and turns it into nothing more than a backdrop for a generic and predictable romantic drama.

If old epics like The Longest Day or Waterloo were made nowadays, they'd probably focus on some twenty-something lieutenant with killer abs, fighting for redemption, caught in a love triangle, ... .
