2D Animation Software (CN et al)

Hey all,

I feel a little foolish asking this. As a 3D guy, I cringe as much as the next person when someone asks a "Which software" question. I'm curious, though.

What software are the big players using for modern cartoon animation, the kinda thing you see on Cartoon Network; My Little Pony, Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo etc?

Google seems to bring up conflicting results. I assume it isn't hand drawn cels right? Either way, I know very little about the field and would love to know more as it's something I have always thought about having a little play with.

Thanks!

The usual 2D software progs are:

Toonboom Progs:

https://www.toonboom.com/products/toon-boom-studio
https://www.toonboom.com/products/animate

Smithmicro Anime Studio progs:

http://anime.smithmicro.com/anime-pro.html

I have all 3 - Toonboom Studio & Animate + Anime Studio PRO ( also comes as way cheaper DEBUT version ).

Of the 3 I mainly use Anime Studio PRO, just prefer it. I think if you come from a 3D software background Anime Studio will feel more comfortable .. in my opinion.

Apparently the toonboom stuff is more suited to those who come from a traditional 2D Animation background.

Their is also the Reallusion stuff:

Great, thanks for the links.

I don't wish to cause offence, but they don't really sell it with their demo videos, do they? That said, they all seem to do the job pretty well.

I did a bit of research too, turns out Flash is quite popular as an animation tool. To further demonstrate my naivety, I thought that was just a deprecated web development platform. Who knew it was such a popular tool for cartoon animators!

With that in mind, I think I'm going to give Flash a go. I have a CC subscription (*hides*) so I may as well go with what I have access to.

I use Flash for animation and I'm a Beta tester for the application (for AS3/App/Web dev stuff most) let me know if you have any questions.

If you've got a CC subscription why not try After Effects and DuIK Tools?

Plus 2.5D Layers, FCurves, Lights, Dof, Motion Blur etc.
