Boston Dynamics continues to creep us out - Humanoid Robot "PETMAN"

If the Big Dog wasn't enough to disturb you, check out this humanoid they are now using to test biohazard suits:

It's interesting watching computer balance determine a walk cycle vs. human/animator intervention.

reminds me of naturalmotion endorphin's approach to physics based character animation. i wonder if these boston dynamics bots share some similar principles in calculating that stuff

Eh Petman is a nothing. It is a clothing testing robot. No worries.
It looks fearsome cause it is in NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) outfits in the video. If anything, why is the US military actively working on new NBC gear?

Boston Dynamics makes several other robots, some that are not out in the public eye as much.
Like Atlas. most of the pictures are old. Atlas is supposedly a Combat capable robot.

This is the challenge that is being worked on by Atlas

if you thought a robot testing clothes was creepy. That will positively leave you speechless and scared.

Also BigDog is old as well. The BigDog program has morphed into LS3 which may or may not be used in combat already.

Just for kicks look into the Lockheed Crusher or the PlusTech/JohnDeere Walking Tractor or the Lockheed KMax robo choppers being used Afghanistan.

The robots are getting out there very fast now.

Watched the entire video waiting for someone to come in and kick it like in that robot dog video. Disappointed.

That there was a jaw dropper for me!

Also I always thought of the creepy factor as being an outward visual one related to cosmetics and the link above demonstrated that it is also dynamics. A wake up.

Thanks for the info.

Edit: Just checked the walking tractor DAYM! Scyfy is here.

there's another video on boston dynamics' channel of someone kicking an earlier version of the PET and it handles it similarly to the big dog

Yay, just like we imagined the future in 2013.

I, for one, welcome our robotic overlords...

I wonder how soon we're going to see such realistic robots in a scifi movie. I believe there would be great potential in such a story, except of course for the still missing aspect of AI.

what this all means?
what's wrong?
what the person was doing?

If there is some reason to
run away to mars then don't
leave me here,

you all are concern
i can feel the goodness
in you all,
this goodness only makes
the human life possible,

Thanks for being good

I am waiting for the day when they start putting skins on these things, like the big dog, and have monsters that are on set, right there, to interact with the actors. Combined with the Oblivion projection backgrounds and you have sic-fi all in camera!

that seems like it would be more expensive than cg

Just a matter of time now until Skynet becomes self-aware

But seriously, it is great to see companies like Boston Dynamics pushing the envelope. IMHO, one the biggest issues we have right now in society is lack of general ambition and projects like these will inspire people.

Almost certainly, but it would allow for actors and effects to interact a lot more naturally.
