Perhaps Lasseter is trying to make the best out of a less than ideal situation. Nothing was going to dissuade Disney from releasing direct to DVD cartoons so at least try and build on an IP that lends itself to multiple stories and merchandizing. The article mentioned 'conflicts' over the changes at DisneyToon. It's possible that Lasseter used the sequels based off of the 'Cars' universe as leverage to exert control over a division that was giving him trouble. Planes/Trains may have been billed as Disney's answer to Thomas the Tank Engine which reportedly makes ~1 Billion annually. Not bad for a 65 year old character.

Admittedly, Cars 1 was mediocre, Cars 2 was horrible, Planes doesn't look any better and Dane Cook sucks as a comic but there might be more of a back story behind the production of this movie than Lasseter pulling a Lucas. Meaning that making all of the animation divisions into cash cows as a whole then affords Lasseter et al freedom from interference by Disney brass and consolidates their control.

That clip is 'TMI' if you know your six year old is gonna make you see this. (o;
It pretty much looks like what we all expect.
I'm slightly curious how the toy planes will benefit the Disney franchise monster vs the success of the toy car (which was HUGE).
