Post VFX Union meeting

I saw this post in Facebook for a meeting and talks about a VFX Union in London. Maybe some of you might be interested.

https://www.facebook.com/events/136...an_user_invited

And when we are already talking about, vote on the poll.

Cheers!

I don't think that's even remotely close to the problem. Studios themselves are going bankrupt, union only help employee.

That's true, but the studios are competing against each other for contracts and there is only so much they can do together before they start risking being accused of pricefixing. If the artists can somehow band together and force the issue with union backing, that might be the only solution for positive change

The linked to event doesn't appear to be pushing unions as the only answer per se, it looks more like an open discussion and I'm definitely keen on that.

I'm not the organizer, I just saw the link and thought I could share. I'll try to get in touch with him to participate on this thread.

Thanks. Just not a big fan of social networks as the only means of communication on the web.
Sorry if it sounded grumpy :-)

the FB post says:

  • St Anne's Church, Soho, W1D 6AF

  • With job insecurity high, pay unreliable and long hours common, VFX can be a tough industry to work in. BECTU, the union for VFX professionals, is here to help.

Union's only really work when the business is making money hand over fist and cheating workers out of profits and other benefits they could easily afford.

But when folks are broke it will only make other folks broker.

What do you think happened to the car industry and Twinkies?

Union wanted more, Hostess couldn't afford, Union wouldn't budge, Hostess closed down. Now everyone loses except the millionare who gets to keep his millions although losing his steady income.

Unions can be great but be careful where they tread especially when a lot of money is not going around.

I dont think it matters right now what we feel about unions.

We as a community fight back or fade into the night..

That simple.

After all there are reports that many of the artists who MADE the film that won Best Visual Effects last night, HAVE NOT BEEN PAID.

That is REALLY screwed up.

This is a really misleading statement I've seen several times right now. Your stating that artists who worked on Life of Pi have not been paid, which is technically true. The problem with the statement is that it implies they haven't been paid for their work on Life of Pi, which simply isn't true. The pay we missed in Jan/feb is for current productions and nothing more. Everyone on Pi was compensated for their work on Pi.

The Union almost shut down Star Wars.
Imagine where this threatened industry would be if the Union followed through on that.

I'm not sure where Scott Ross teetered between "Trade Organization" and then "VFX Labor Union".... but I really liked the "Trade Organization" idea better.

I mean really, the studios technically are the ones closing down... so something has to give.

The Trade Organization may follow though when all the studios face similar worker demands.... Hmmm....
