What software?

I'm looking for a 3D application that will let me play a video clip in the view port while moving around in the scene. The pic below is from the d3 Technologies projection mapping application where video is displayed real time on the LED screens but you can move around and view the stage from any angle while the video plays. Does anyone know of anything that can do this?

Any other requirements? Because, if that's all you want to do, After Effects can do just fine.

Cant any 3d program do this as well? Play back footage in real time in the viewport?

3ds max can play video files (both as background or as textures) in the viewport, though at 1024x1024px max. afaik.

Id be surprised if any of the other big names couldnt do this?

Maya and Cinema 4D can too. In general though I think you'll get a more responsive scene using image sequences rather than video files as having a 3D app decompress a video codec for every frame is bound to have a performance hit.

But will the video keep playing when I pan and zoom etc in the view port?

You want to check out Derivative's Touch Designer, its a node based realtime visual development platform. Incredible powerfull tool.

I believe Softimage can also do what you are looking for, and depending on what you might want to do, you can also drive animation with the audio file...here is an example done with ICE inside of Softimage.

Software is a pretty big investment if you don't work for a studio. You should give the 30day trials a run first to see which one you like best, before making a purchase.

If you're going for realtime, then neither max, maya or soft will really cut it.

You can use Maya and Autocad too..
