J.J. Abrams To Direct New ‘Star Wars’ Movie For Disney
Quote:
"Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will be helming the next Star Wars movie. “It’s done deal with J.J.,” a source with knowledge of the situation told Deadline today. Argo director Ben Affleck was also up for the gig, the source says. Abrams was courted heavily by producer Kathleen Kennedy to take the Star Wars job. Expected in 2015, Abrams’ Episode VII effort will be the first new Star Wars movie since 2005′s Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. Michael Arndt is writing the script for the first installment of the relaunch of George Lucas’ franchise by Disney. " Whoa! http://www.deadline.com/2013/01/j-j...vie-for-disney/ __________________

![]() Noooooooooooooooooo. ![]() I am all for him doing whatever he's doing with Star Trek, but must he be handed the keys to every goddamn sci-fi franchise ever? I am holding out hope it is just a rumor, since it is all from a single unknown source. Last edited by hypercube : 01 January 2013 at 11:24 PM. |

With J.J. Abrams currently being my favorite director, I find this pretty awesome, if this is really true!!

Somehow somewhere they crowned JJ as the next Spielberg. I've enjoyed some of his work, facepalmed like the rest of the world at the end of Lost, wasn't too thrilled about last week's ending for Fringe and crap like Revolution or Alcatraz are too bad to mention. Movie-wise i thought Super 8 was a lot of hype and a bland deliverance and Star Trek was a nice sci-fi movie, but not a "cult" reboot in the scale or "wow" factor it deserved considering the means and tech available, compared to the V'Ger oldie, which is still memorable. On that note, it starts to feel like he's becoming a "typecasted" director, like Hollywood "sci-fi go-to guy". I find it odd that they couldn't get a director or writer previously involved in the Star wars franchise. Ofc, disregard this if the news get denied.

![]() You had me until this line. ![]() The only director worth a damn to this franchise (I.K.) died 2 years ago. And even his career was spotty at best. Besides, recruiting people who worked on the other films could only be a detriment at this point (except for ILM). |

Well I think if Abrams can show some restraint... he'll be a good fit. Probably good enough to do VII, VIII, and IX.
His films just never become "too heavy".. and in that way it would have worked. Still liked it better when I thought Spielberg was a shoo-in with Kathleen Kennedy onboard. And yes, Irvin Kirschner was the best director Star Wars ever had. I hope Abrams watches his work on Empire Strikes Back, not really to copy it, but to know the style to launch from when doing his own take. Question: Does this mean the STAR TREK series just lost its director? If he plans to keep both gigs going, can he come up with a different style for STAR WARS? (which goes back to my suggestion to watch IV, V, VI). ...I guess this means that STAR TREK has indeed gone "INTO DARKNESS"! lol! __________________

he makes sense in terms of producing it perhaps. Id still want spielberg involved in this somehow. JJ should stick to Star Trek imo because it'll keep looking great.
Doing both trek and wars at the same time, thats too risky imo, and frankly it entirely depends on what Disney green lights in terms of a trilogy script. I'd be all for a darker "empire strikes back" trilogy instead of the jar jar fluff we had to deal with, and for that I'd have a totally different director than, say, something more kid friendly like A New Hope/ Jedi returns. |

They could just sprinkle some more Red Matter to combine the franchises so he doesnt have to choose one or the other
