OptiTrack has had a trackable camera system for a few years already, and this is one of the things that was so groundbreaking with avatar which was filmed back in 2009.

It's cool but not really "groundbreaking"

And before that the Surf's Up camera crew used a similar technique to get the doco style feel in the films shots.

This technique goes back even even further than Surfs Up or Avatar.

It was used on Fellowship of the Ring for previs of the troll sequence.

They also motion-captured the on-set cameras on A.I., using video mixers to create a rough composite from the video tap and 3d scene (not sure what software they were using for this back then, you'd probably use motionbuilder for it these days) so they could see what the backgrounds would look like on scenes shot on blue-screen stages.

There are possibly earlier examples of this technique, but off the top of my head I can't think of them.

With all that in mind, I'm sure Disney have come up with an innovative system.

Oh yeah! I remember seeing that on set virtual camera in AI in a making-of, pretty neat.

I remember writing an article about that. I think they used an existing gaming engine, UNREAL TOURNAMENT maybe?
