From OBJ to STL: What are you 3D Printing Tips and Tricks.

This is a thread for those who already do 3D printing, and for those who are interested in doing it.

Here are some question for those who have dabbled in 3D printing, or better yet people who own their own printers.
  • How do you convert your models?
  • What format do you prefer for 3D printing ? (STL?)
  • How do different material print? Do you have a material preference?
  • How do model details that will show up in the printed model?
  • What consideration do you have to do when modeling?
  • How do you waterproof a model?
  • What companies do you use ? ShapeWays? Do you own a 3d Printer? If so Which one?
  • What is your experience with it?
I am looking forward to your comments and ideas.

this is an object I had printed by shapeways, material is "white, strong and flexible"

nylon as far I'm aware, doesn't feel at all fragile

not brilliant detail, but it was relatively cheap.. around £35 ( would be cheaper now because I've hollowed out the model )

It was built entirely in zbrush and then exported using the STL exporter

For conversion and especially mesh repair/optimization I used the NetFab software:

The basic version already offers a lot of features and is completely free even for comercial usage. It has great repair functions. I needed these to clean up the export from Cinem4D, which was messed up because of boolean operations. Only a few clicks ad you have a perect model ready for printing.

The professional version adds many features ( ) but I found the basic version to be sufficient for all my tasks.

I guess the other tools of the company may also be of interest if you are deep into rapid prototyping.

From what i tried the cloud version of netfabb works even better, it repaired some problems that i had a hard time with using the normal version.

I have build myself a RepRap and i print mostly ABS.

Great thread. I'm on the cusp myself of getting 3d printing done, funny enough for projects that have nothing to do with VFX.
