1) Disney buying Lucasfilm
2) Foundry + Lux merger
3) D2 tanking
4) VFX rescue missions (everybody stepped up to pick up stray D2 employees and AL pulling Fuel out of admin)
5) The Hobbit I'm sure will be worthy of featuring, but with things under such tight wraps and a very end of year release, it will be hard to pin down the content for that one.
6) Steam coming to Linux
7) Unity 4

This is probably the biggest platform shift year I've seen since SGI and Alpha started going belly up at the same time.
Windows not being the gorilla in the room for the year, mobile/personal encouraging platform independent development, and that trickling down to unexpected Linux support are all going to have a much bigger and longer lasting impact than the consequence of those things (win8).

I strongly disagree about DNeg's layoffs being included, it was a rather common downsize during an equally common dry patch, just it got overdramatized by a viral tweet. If this kind of stuff was to go into it, then we'd need half the entries every year to be a similar event, it wasn't even a big one compared to most of the previous lulls in London.

The other three can be any of the usual software releases that make it in every year despite a strong stagnation in most fields

What was - probably - the single biggest NEW thing of 2012?

I'd say that it was KICKSTARTER CROWDFUNDING of many, many new game projects.
