cyberpunk cityscapes ref. in films
I was wondering if there's been good cyberpunk cityscapes around there since judge dredd 1995, the sequence we see at the beginning of the movie was impressive in term of scale, details, and originality.
While it's quite old, I didn't see something as compelling as it since then.
But I'm searching for sequences in films that have the most impressive cyberP or futuristic cityscapes for further reference for a project. I know a few, but not comparable to judge dredd 1995.

ooo Brazil is worth checking out anyways.
Aeon Flux - city shots.
Equilibrium - Nice city shots
Tron (old and new) - The Grid
The Matrix (all three) - Zion, and the machine city
I-Robot - Some great shots of future Chicago
Metropolis - The root of all modern sifi cities.
THX-1138 - Interior stuff mostly. The highway scene is cool.
The Island - Interior shots mostly. Some future LA stuff though.
12 Monkeys - Interior stuff mostly.
Batman Begins - Cool shots of Gotham.
Here's a link I've got bookmarked. Its mostly stuff from this site.

The one thing that always struck me about the cyberpunk city scape (but I must add this is largely an impression based on books, manga and anime) is it's utter sameness to current "big" cities. A little flashier (more invasive advertisement) in commercial areas, a little darker in the back alleys, but basically modern city life as it's already visible in areas of extreme urban density. The whole idea behind cyberpunk is/was a near-future setting and to achieve this you must try extrapolate a little, but most definitively not fall in the trap of overdoing it...

you want cyberpunk? You gotta go anime:
Ghost in the Shell
Bubblegum Crisis 2032 (can't find a decent intro video, but there's an amazing episode 1 opening shot)
.. i'll see if I can't think of more

I personally think its helpful to de-construct what makes a city cyber punk and why. Think more about genre and influence. If you work forward from the source material you wont fall into the trap of making something that is literally a superficial interpretation of someone else's interpretation.
Just an example but Ridley Scott in his film Alien was far more interested in metabolic architecture than he was other sci-fi films when establishing the visuals.
I think yes be aware of what has been done before but its quite an easy trap to copy it. I personally find it a lot more interesting and exciting to create and solve a problem nobody else thought of, the source is often obscure and outside popular culture.
There was no Akira and Ghost in the shell before Akira and Ghost in the shell, if you look at Japanese cities in general, well that got to be a better start point, but its been done a lot. Part of why District 9 was so iconic is they went right back to the beginning and worked from there.

Thank you conbom, it's very interesting and I think you're right.
The only problem for me is that I don't have a traditional artistic background, and I don't have the skills to analyze and make concept designs. I assume this is related to architecture/design and traditionnal drawing, etc. Another problem is the lack of time to do this. I guess what's left for me is to copy and get inspiration of what's already done, lol...
Anyway, I will try to do something in this way. Thank you again for this good advice.

Also comes into my mind:
- The movie "Serenity" and also the TV series of (Serenity) "Firefly" had some nice but short city-shots too.
- "Venus Wars" (whole anime is on YouTube btw.)
- "Priest" (city shots are Blade Runner like a bit)
