Coolest Mechs?

I was recently watching District 9 again, and it hit me, as it always does, how freaking awesome that mech is at the end of the movie. The way it moves, sounds, the HUD, the design, the damage, the interaction. To me, it is the best execution of a mech I've seen in a movie.

Which leads me to ask, what are your favorite mech moments? Be it an illustration, finished piece, 3d, movie whatever. What is the most badass mech you can think of? The definition of mech can be pretty broad so nearly anything goes. Extra points for something obscure!

Good place to start:

But as for movies, my sentimental fave is Huey, Duey, & Looie from Silent Running. There's always ED-209 for the humor/satire. And I hated the mech from Avatar when I saw the initial designs, but it worked well in the film.

In general, mechs in film have barely been explored in any interesting ways. They are always just humanoid robots. It would be great to see a truly threatening and scary powered fighting suit or big-dog type running mech, perhaps scaled up to giraffe size.

I'm hoping we'll see something awesome in Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim...

In addtion to what others said, I always liked Robot Jox, that's about the closest thing to MechWarrior that we have in films, which is probably more what you were getting at.

I am certainly a fan of the District 9 style mech as well. I wish someone would pick up a legitimate Mech Warrior film, here is an old cinematic:

District 9 mech is my all time favorite mech design. Also Cain in robocop 2. The new game Hawken has some awesome mech designs in it as well.

I love those, too. I believe those design are by Khang Le and Aaron Beck (who also did the mech soldiers in the "Keloid" short linked above). Le is one of my favorite concept artists out there right now.

Mechwarrior Online, using CryEngine 3, is currently in Beta:

Many of the classic FASA Battlemech designs are in the game, and can be piloted in multiplayer combat.

I'm playing Borderlands 2 a lot these days. Cool to see Claptrap here.

Aw, how could I forget Claptrap. I think only R2 has him beat on personality.
