The Making of the New Sci Fi show: "Defiance"

Quote:
"
We're creeping closer to the April 2013 debut of Defiance, which will be both a dramatic TV series from Syfy and an immersive MMO designed by Trion Worlds. To get a better idea of the look and feel of Defiance, take a behind-the-scenes tour of the sets—both real and virtual—and learn how its otherworldly look will be achieved.

From the mind of Farscape creator Rockne S. O'Bannon, and with a cast that includes the likes of Mia Kirshner (24), Jaime Murray (Dexter), Tony Curran (The Pillars of the Earth), Stephanie Leonidas (MirrorMask), Julie Benz (Angel) and Grant Bowler (True Blood), Defiance will chronicle the world-changing events on Earth as seven alien races begin to move in on the planet, and the war that ensues when negotiations don't go so well. That city stuff looks awesome, both the digital and sets. The design is really refreshing, like it was a society just slightly in the future that got shut-down/overtaken (or whatever happens).

The rest (the craggy mountains, etc.) looks like generic sci-fi stuff.

When ever I hear "Aliens invade earth" as a premise, I think to myself: "Again?"
Rest in peace originality, here comes the cash grab...

I really want to believe in something new and exciting like this, but guess this will probably die a horrible death; like Terranova for example. And the whole game/tv cross over ... as great as it could potentially be, will probably suffer an equal fate. The artwork put into this though looks pretty amazing!

Is there any explanation out there as to how the game and show will interact with each other?

For people who don't know, Defiance was launched 2 weeks ago.

Here's the making of/behind the scenes of the first episode. I have to say the green screen and set extensions and virtual sets looks amazing for a TV series. Plus it's interesting how this was all done by an in-house team.

What do people think? Also has anyone played the game and watched the series? Does the game really add a different experience to the series?

About 5 minutes was all I could give this.
The previews alone killed it for me.

I made it through about 40 minutes of the pilot and that was as far as I'm going. I REALLY disliked this. For so many reasons. The sets were great, but the rest of it wasn't enough to get me to give it another try. It's unfortunate because I really wanted to like this.

Trailer definitely made me want to watch it. I am surprised by the bad reviews here. It looks like they spent a lot more money on it that most SyFy stuff I have ever seen.

They did and it definitely shows in the sets and makeups (although IMO the basic design of a lot of the makeups is fairly generic), but the writing, acting, editing, etc. was all way to similar to their "B" level shows like "Sharktapuss" and "Bigfoot" imo.

For me, Defiance is a miss.

It's quite simply boring as hell, with nobody that I care about or care to relate to. All of the secondary storylines are even worse. Two eps in, I'll give it a third, but I really have zero expectations at this point.

As for the VFX, I haven't been blown away because they've hidden most of the major stuff with darkness. The (daylight) city shots looked okay, but generic.

I was never a Farscape fan, but this has a way different vibe and it still doesn't really work for me.

I watched the entire pilot just to see it to the end.
Most of the vfx shots were good, some ok and some reminded me of a video game.
Which makes me wonder if they were not put in there on purpose as a tie in to the video game.
I noticed Gray Hutzel and Doug Drexler, of BSG and Blood and Chrome, in the credits. Does any one know of they set up shop in Vancouver or were they still working out of L.A?
