Luxology and the Foundry to Merge?

I haven't been able to find a concrete source for this, but have heard the Foundry and Luxology will be merging. A google search for "foundry and luxology merge" lists a CG Society feature and press release, both links dated for october 3rd.

Press Release - October 3, 2012
CG society feature

If it's true, this is very exciting news, especially for the future of Modo!

Between the two of them, they'd start to be a serious rival to Autodesk. That would be very good for all of us.

If Autodesk only consisted of its "Media & Entertainment" division, that might be the case. As Autodesk is a bit larger than that, I doubt they will be shaking in their boots, so to speak...

You know what is funny Luxology probably has nearly as many design/engineering customers as Autodesk thanks to that deal!

Sure, but we're still talking Autodesk here.
Even a merged Luxology-Foundry would probably be something the big AD could conceivable still "gobble" up before lunch...

PS Not that I am an AD fanboy, don't get me wrong, this is "all about size", I'm afraid...

Maybe but I bet in the license agreement they signed with Dassault and Bentley there are some strict clauses on selling out to Autodesk.. Also I don't think its the company culture of either companies to want to sell out, to me they seem like people who would rather let the company die then sell it to Autodesk..

Interesting, reading that article I see the words 'venture' and 'joint effort' but nothing about a 'joint venture' so looks like its a merger to some extent.

I suppose this is good news depending on who you are.

As a Modo user, this is pretty exciting. I wonder if this will push Luxology to do more standardized stuff with shading and rendering in the future. There's already a lot of great shader stuff in Modo, but a lot of it's buried under some problematic interface issues.

I have always had a soft spot for Modo. The application is a lot of fun (even the uv section) and I wish them the best with this merger.

Brad, Stuart and Allen, keep on trulin'.

Oh please. Autocad alone must have 100 times more licenses sold than both those companies' application portfolio put together...

Probably correct. I know companies that were using AutoCAD 20 years ago, and that have never switched to other software.

Wow. I have been using Nuke for over a year now for compositing (I was using Composite from Autodesk but it was a joke) and I am more impressed with Nuke then any other software I've ever used. I've been using Maya for about 7 years full time. So I am very happy to hear foundry is buying/ merging with Luxology, getting stronger.

Rant below:

Autodesk has needed to get a kick in the but a bit for years now, but no has been a competition with Autodesk in my opinion enough for them to care. Competition is always a good thing for business. The best thing for Apple is Google and vis versa cause it keeps both of these giants on their toes. Autodesk has been far ahead for to long. I think this Foundry Luxology merge is a real threat to Autodesks supremacy.

Foundry to me is the most amazing software company going. I hope this merge does mess things up but makes it stronger.
