Maya - repel objects / no overlap


I searched with all the keywords I could think of (repel, collision, push, no overlapping...) but in vain.
What I need is a simple way to push objects away from one another.
This is not for animation or dynamics, so rigid bodies aren't an option.
Simply looking for a way to separate cluttered objects from one another.
Is there a way to do this with mel or python?
Ideally, with a way to select the max distance you want the object to be repelled.

Might try looking in the app-specific forum. There is a dynamics area in there, small, but there.
