Concept Sketch: Beyond the Horizon

This piece that I am working on is about a young boy who enjoys adventuring. He is looking out beyond the waters edge to the distant mountain - that being his journey's end.

Modeling: Beyond the Horizon

I first start with a quick Biped layout, which I then adjust the proportions, to get a desired character figure.

Next I blocked out my character with reference to the Biped's proportion that I set up earlier.

Next, I start to refine the character's body. This allows me to get added detail where I like, and enhances the proportions.

After I added some detail to the main body. I then detached the hand and modeled it separately. My character is going to be wearing gloves, so I had to adjust the mesh accordingly.

I then started to do the same to the shoe as I did with the hand. I separated the mesh from the main body, and then added detail to get my desired look.

Here is the final model of the shoe. I added creases in the mesh to represent the areas where the seems will be come texture time. I also went with a gym shoe / rock climbing shoe for the final shoe mesh.

I finished up the shorts - more of a khaki type of a style. I added a front, side and back pocket.

I added the hands, shoes, and refined the shorts. After those were done, I readjusted some of the proportions. Now it's time for the head...
