The Journey Begins Challenge (3D) Entry: steve wood

steve wood is entered in the "The Journey Begins Challenge" update: View Challenge Page

Latest Update: Final Image
: "Off to work"

Title: "Off to work"
The story.
So what's so adventerous about Grandpa Teenywink going off to work in the morning? So what's the journey all about? Well I'll tell you.
This may seem like a mundane thing to you or me, but to Grandpa and Grandma Teenywink, it's a different story. As we see Grandpa doing what he has been doing faithfully for the past 50 years with a playful smile, giving his wife a goodbye kiss on the cheek, he heads off to work to the island nearby atop his old faithful companion he calls "Spitfire" the dragonfly.
Grandpa may not be the most handsome teenywink in the world or the most exciting guy to be around, but he's faithful and dependable and strives always to put his wife and family first. He may not be the most skilled with a hammer as well, but he did his best to build the best and most safest house he could in the most tallest teenywink tree he could find. Grandma Teenywink, though she may not be the most prettiest girl in the forrest, loves her husband, children, and grandchildren very much and has always been there to care for them when they were sick or to listen to them when they would come to her with their troubles.
Everyone knows of Grandma and Grandpa Teenywink because they've never turned anyone away when they've needed help. Grandma is well known for collecting extra nuts and berries to give to others when they needed food. Just about every baby Teenywink in the forrest has at least one pair of socks that Grandma Teenywink has knitted for them. Grandpa Teenywink has never refused anyone when he was asked to lend a hand. If someone needed to fix a chair or build a house, he's right there with hammer and nails whether he knows what he's doing or not. Both of them know that Grandpa has only a short window of time to leave to make it safetly to work. Those precious few moments in the early dawn in the teenywink forrest. That period of time between the night creatures returning to their dens, to the rising of the birds of prey that patrol the air for their favorite meal by snatching a teenywink from the skies.
As we see Grandma Teenywink standing on her rickety porch, that to her is a beautiful mansion, enjoys her morning coffee awaiting her husband's kiss. She's been doing this faithfully for the past 50 years knowing it could be her last. Without a word spoken, she smiles. Without a word spoken, he kisses. Spitfire's wings begin to hum with violent fury as he hears his master's approach. He knows his wings are the only thing between today and no tomorrow.
Grandma knows, Grandpa knows, Spitfire knows....The journey begins.

latest update

I was just playing around with some ideas in refining my sketch. This is just a very basic idea of where I'm headed in terms of scale, view, color, etc.

Thanks for the crits.

I added some backgound cause I thought it would be too boring without showing something of interest.

One thing that I didn't want to do is create a "me too" kind of character. I just think it's too commonplace to create the standard nymph, troll, hobbit, or dwarf that you always see.

Maybe I'll tweak em' just a bit to make them more unique.
