Ok, so I just found out about this challenge so I figured I'd give it a try. I generally work in 3D, but I just finished watching the Gnomon Matte Painting DVD's so I figured I'd try something new and put some of the knowledge I gained to use. Hopefully I'll expand my comfort zone as an artist at the same time. I'm going to start mocking up the image tonight.

Line Art: Line art

So today I did some quick line art based on the sketch and did a photo shoot to gather the 2D pactical elements for this matte painting. Tonight I'm gonna start working on the background elements and see if I can get a handle on the overall color and lighting of the composition.

Coloring WIP: IntoTheTrees Background

Ok, so last night and today I knocked in the background elements and windows. I also setup my 2.5D composite scene in max so I can render and light the 3D foreground elements acurately based on the background. Once I have the 3D elements in I'll go back and add the atmosphere (fog and smoke). I also need to do a fine tuning pass on the bark and foregrongd leaves (I didn't quiete get the lighting right on the fine leaves). I also plan on adding some foreground leaves (right next to the camera). Hopefully that'll make it feel like we're right in the forest.

Coloring WIP: In the Trees

So I think I'm in the final stretch. Today I added most of the 3d elements and the fog layer. I still have a few 3d elements to add, some smoke and the characters. I also need to do a general fine tuning pass and clean up some of the 3d elements. Yay.

That looks nice, and quick . How did you do that soft, grassy-mossy green vegetation ? hair, or just painted ?

this is looking really good Michael...

It's amazing how quickly you've managed to put this together - very impressive

I love the details, textures and the lighting is really making this atmospheric...

Looking forward to seeing the development of the characters

Added the characters. Need to do a final clean up and integrate the 3D elenments a bit better. Photoshop is getting pretty flaky on me with this many layers. Crashes every hour now.

Thanks MrFreeman,
Here's the characters. I see now that the 3D elements aren't sitting in the canvas quite right. I need to do a little work over the top to knock them back a bit. I'd love to get comments and crits at this point. I need to finish this up this weekend cause my wife will be back from visiting her parents and I want to spend some time with her.

Comments welcome and appreciated.
