Not sure how to set up figure

im refering to making stick figure/ gesture poses. Im not sure how you get everything set up like where the shoulders are or how long legs and where the knees are on a typical person. if you dont understand what i mean ill try to clarify. if anyone had any links or something that would help alot. thanks in advance.
