coloerd Pencil, .9mm hb pencil, standard printer paper...

10-15 minutes for torso study. (sketch removed for renovations...will be back up tommorrow).

stipick_S,

This drawing is quite nice, however, I immediately notice that the figure needs WAY more shoulder mass, and a bit more space above the pecs ~ as it stands, his chest is too close to his neck, practically in his throat ~ so that part needs a bit of tweaking.

The linework, however, is very nice ~ good work!

A couple of figure studies done from life.
The drawing in both is a bit flawed, but I tend to avoid going back to correct any problems....especially when it's just a study.
Rational: I learn more from my mistakes hanging around on the walls.

Grey pastels (Prismacolor seels a full set of greys - warm and cool - highly recommended)

Charcoal - soft compressed and/or vine

Pastel (sepia....better than erasing)

Canson paper

18x24

@ 45 minutes

Hi,
so here are my "best" torsos, I drew only these (first tries) therefore these are my "best".

reference images are from the book Anatomy for the Artist
medium: pencil (B)
image completition time ... well, the first image say 2 days, the second image several hours
process: hmmm ... nothing special ... a lot of redoing and checking proportions (first image) so the image was changing a lot till I was satisfied

these are much more bigger (first image A4) in real on the paper (and they look better on the paper)

I hope I will have opportunity to draw some images from life soon because its better than drawing from photo but for now I think drawing from photos is better than not drawing anything.

Hey Rebecca I was wondering if you could have a looke at this (It has a torso in it i guess) but ive been having some issues with memorizing anatomy and working without a reference, do you have any suggestions? Thanks Much

Thank you for posting your work! Here is my review of your drawing:



I think that the main thing to emphasize here is that you need to do a GESTURAL DRAWING FIRST. Then it's best to add generic mass to the torso and limbs by creating basic shapes with spheres, cylinders, and boxes. ONLY AFTER you have established the BASICS should you begin to be concerned with Anatomy.

Let me ask, how often do you draw from life? You ought to do so as much as possible, or, if that is not possible, do copies from Old Master drawings, or copy Reference from books or from the Web of nude models, both male and female. CLOTHES are ALWAYS secondary to a knowledge of human form. Clothes will never look correct if the underlying structure of the body is inaccurate.

I would also encourage you to participate in Lesson 003: Shading and Skulls ~ see the link in my Signature. You may post work through August 5th, so there is plenty of time! There are absolutely no shortcuts to learning human anatomy, and one must go through the proper steps in order to achieve a final figurative work.

Arrow Next pencil sketch

I did another pencil sketch of this character and I got kinda confused about your section on opposing curves. I just cant seem to understand it. Well anyway any comments are more than appreciated.

SurfGod69a,

Wow, I think this shows a lot of improvement!!! I think the face and the legs look MUCH better, and I can see you really made a great effort to improve your piece, so you are to be congratulated.

There are still some problems, but I probably won't be able to give this a thorough review until I get back from SIGGRAPH on August 5th, but in the meantime, I hope you continue to refine your drawing, and participate in some of the other threads going on, like the Figure Drawing Workshop (see Sticky at top of Page 1) etc.

Thanks for posting your update! With reference to Opposing Curves, I would just suggest going through the initial tutorial again, and looking at the work which people submitted.
These are not easy concepts, and can take weeks, months, or years to REALLY learn. So don't fret if these things don't make sense right away. The key is to KEEP DRAWING, there is nothing which I nor anyone else can TELL you to make you better ~ you just have to draw a lot in order for these concepts to begin to make sense. Trust me, it's taken me YEARS to learn how to draw, and I still don't feel like I'm "there", nor will I probably ever feel that way.

Keep going, and keep posting your work!

3months into drawing..

Hiya

This is my first post, regarding traditional medium.. I have be a 3d environment artist for nearly 10 years now, and about three months ago my wife (a great figure artist, and 3d environment artist herself) convinced me to do some figure drawing.. It just happens that my work runs figure drawing exercises every week, so I get the oportunity to draw for 3 hours most weeks.

I have started working on shading a lot more, and would love any advice anyone can give - whether it is about proportion, line work, shading etc.

The attached drawing took 6 hours, and is a charcol pencil on newsprint (i know newsprint isnt the best to draw on!). I drew the figure as a rough gesture, then started roughing in the outlines by using measurement lines (holding up your pencil, and drawing light lines across the paper, to make sure key features are in the correct place). Once the gesture and outline was done, I started working on the shading..

I have been learning from a bunch of artists here - some of which are extremely good at shading - and noticing the differences between cast and form shadow, and bounce light... My main focus of my work of late, has been trying to accurately represent these different shadow and light types.
