Question Cut [options] (SOLVED)

What exactly is the workflow to use Cut> options?

Select an edge ring and press x. The number of new edge loops will be as specified in the options.

Selecting (or highlighting) a single edge and using shift-x to split an new loop will ignore the cut options and insert only a single loop; as will the cut tool.

Slightly confusing nomenclature I guess; as it works only on pre-selected edge rings and not the actual cut tool. A small side effect of having multiple functions under a single tool.
