I don't know where to start

I have posted this before in similar context but here it goes. I am graduating this year and interested in becoming an environment artist for games. I just love how important environments are and are becoming especially with all of the advancements in technology. So many new details can be created environment art in games is becoming if not already more or just as important as character art. My problem is I don't know where to start. I have all the software i need 3ds max photoshop zbrush I just need to know. What should I be focusing on to get good as an environment artist first. Should it be the drawing of reference, painting concepts modeling, lighting, texturing, or should it be all of these things combined? I am going to college for game art next year, but want to get a jump start on it. I am a pretty good drawer, but could use some help with light theory in my sketches. I am almost just starting to model and deal with color. Any advice would help Thanks.

If you can do both 2D concept art and 3D environments, then you'll be even more valuable than if you only knew one. Being able to paint really well can give you an edge--your environments can be more than just typical realism--it can have interesting artistic qualities since your texture work will have painterly qualities. You can also then work out your lighting and color scheme before even booting up a 3D program.

But regardless if you want to focus on 3D or 2D, you must master your visual art foundations (composition, color theory, values, lighting, perspective...etc). My suggestion is to tackle both 2D and 3D, or start on 2D first and after you feel you've got a solid handle on it, then start on 3D.

You can also look into photography as well--it helps a lot to learn landscape/architectural photography. It helps you develop an eye for interesting and compelling imagery in those genres.
