info on the art of word balloons?

I am looking for information on how to create word balloons, text balloons or speech balloons (see? I am even uncertain what the right term is in english... I used all versions in my search... ) for comic panels and couldn't find any.

I am especially trying to find out how you would go about creating some of the more expressive examples of word balloons, the ones which feature bold or distorted letters, or other enhancements to make emotions more clear to the reader.

I heard that you would normally use a vector based app to add your lettering to finished panels.

- Why is that?
- How do you go about it?
- Does anyone know where I can find tutorials or solid hints on how to get lettering done for comic panels?
- Do you mix fonts to create the above mentioned extreme examples of lettering?

thanks for reading
