How to create level/progress game screen

Hi Guys,

I am a indie game developer and in the game I am currently working on I need to create a nice level/progress screen. Here are the links to some example level/progress screens that I like and would like to have mine similar too.

Here is an example of what I am talking about in terms of style. I Really like the second example since it is more generic:

My question how would I go about creating some screens like these. I am not really a modeller but I am decent at animating and rendering.

I have the following resources:

3D Max 7.0
Poser 6.0
Truespace 3.5

If someone could let me know the general theory or technique about accomplishing these results it would be greatly appreciated.
