Zorn vs. Sargent

matt sammekull posted this at the Cenini forum, and I thought it was very interesting:

"We were talking about how different the approach to the sitter was comparing Zorn with Sargent.
This is a good example, as the two extraordinary artists both portrayed Isabella Stewart Gardner (the museum is right up your alley Rob, isn't it?)

Gardner told the story, how when Sargent found out that Zorn already had painted her, he wanted to see the painting. Gardner said "no, not until you have finished yours".
Well, at the day of completion, she let Sargent see Zorn's portrait of her, and Sargent said nothing, but instead grabbed a nearby poker and destroyed his portrait. The one we see today is actually his second attempt.

The two artists painted in a similar manner, they both new the lady, they both spent a lot of time with her and still the result is so very different from each other. The saw the same woman we very different eyes and hearts."

I wonder if either of them felt threatened by Sorolla. They must've been at least a bit concerned.

Thanks for mentioning Sorolla, hadn't heard of him before.

And here's an artist who might go well together with the previously mentioned.


Albert Edelfelt, Finnish of course.

I was looking at some of Zorn's watercolors at artrenewal.com, and was amazed at the size of some of those monsters. Several were 8 feet or so - on paper. Yikes! No wonder he was able to paint so nicely. My stuff is like on a postage stamp compared to that.

that is unbelievably photorealistic for a watercolour, i dont even recall oil painting that manage that 'slightly old colour photo' look, brilliant !

I'm just trying to get my head around an 8 x 6 foot sheet of paper. It won't roll up like canvas, so the handling had to be very special indeed. Amazing.

I've allways found Zorn's work to have that slightly more realistic touch, and Sargent's paintings are more lovely to look at, it's hard to express. I love them both Zorn owns everyone elses water though.

On a sidenote, as a foreign speaker I'm not sure how to pronounce "Sargent". Is it like French style (which I thought), but since I learnt he had US parents maybe that is'nt true???

Sargent is just Sargent. No other pronunciation as far as I know.

some more good painties

If you are interested in others with similar talents for portrait rendering circa Sargent era.. you might also want to look up guys like Phillip Alexius deLazlo (Sargent's portrait heir in London c. 1920s ), Giovanni Boldini.. famous for crazy elongations, but still dripping with flash and talent. Some great broad brush Russians.. Val Serov, Nic Fechin (was absolutely phenomenal pre USA ), the great massah Ilya Repin.. who taught both those guys. As far as the argument Zorn vs Sargent... my money is on Zorn... bettah colour , but I think Sorolla could've given them a run for their money had he solely practiced portraiture. Oh yeah .. what about the likes of cecelia beaux, frank duvanek, merrit chase, akseli gallen-kallelan, and 1950s pietro anigonni?!?!
